Posted 08 Dec 2025: Accounts Assistant - AAT trainee
We are a small, busy and growing accountancy practice mainly working with local, Gloucestershire based, owner-managed businesses and individuals.  We assist clients with compliance work such as annual accounts, VAT returns, payroll and tax returns as well as providing on-going business support and tax advice as required.  Currently, we employ 16 staff and are looking for an apprentice to join us next summer.

The job role will involve bookkeeping and business administration support, to include:

  • working within our bookkeeping and VAT return preparation department taking clients records and inputting and managing the information on accounting software (typically SAGE and Xero).

  • assistance with client payroll preparation.

  • support with Making Tax Digital self-assessment accounts preparation and quarterly submissions to HMRC.

  • managing daily post received in the office.

  • responsibility for management of client records.

  • involvement with client file maintenance.

  • regular written and verbal communications with clients and external bodies (e.g. HMRC).

  • developing time management of deadlines and work scheduling in relation to the above tasks.

  • some telephone and reception cover during busy times of the day.

The above list is not exhaustive, and we would be looking for the individual to be exposed to more if they show desire and aptitude to learn and develop into other areas.

This role will be supported by us financially, with the employee working towards the successful completion of their level 3 and 4 AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) qualification. There is potential, after successful completion of the AAT qualification, for further supported study towards the Association of Charted Certified Accountants (ACCA) accountancy qualification.

Target role start date will be between 1st July 2026 and 31st August 2026.

The role will be full time, Monday to Friday, working a 37.5hr week at our office on Hucclecote Road, Gloucester.

Candidates should show a desire to work in the accountancy profession and should be able to demonstrate numeracy and literacy skills (A-Level Maths preferred but not essential).  The successful candidate will be expected to converse with clients over the telephone and in person so should be comfortable with these interactions.

Any questions should be directed in the first instance to accounts@hatsgloucester.co.uk.
